Russia: Leader of the Free World?

The man who has been coined as "The Chuck Norris of Politics" for his tough-guy image and long-lasting rule over Russia has now taken such a prominent position in global politics (in part thanks to Russia's USSR-inherited United Nations Security Council permanent membership and veto power) that he is probably the most supported politician of note on the planet at the moment.

Assuming that Putin, contrary to popular belief, is not a dictator/tyrant, do you think that Putin is the leader of the free world? If so, do you believe that Russia will maintain the position as the leader of the free world beyond the United Russia (Putin and Medvedev) administration over Russia?

Furthermore, do you believe that Russia could attain a level of power and influence comparable to the "hyperpower" United States after the fall of the USSR in the near future (10-20 years) without the onset of a world-changing event (WWIII)?

He's only gaining praise because he ended the Syria thing without war right? Meh, it's just hype right now.
