Nuke's animoo
I'm pretty bored, so I'm thinking about watching animoo for awhile.

I need to watch Hellsing sometime.

Drawing from Kotaku's little animoo recommendations since I am not actually an otaku or anything, just a guy who likes good animoo sometimes.

1. Hellsing (both series)
2. Yamato 2199 (sure whatever)
3. Arpeggio of Blue Steel (You can tell my old interests still have influence here.)
4. Log Horizon (just because I want to see if I have the patience...maybe)
5. Valvrave the Liberator (Everybody needs mecha.)
6. Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (moar mecha)
7. Sunday without God
8. Hyperdimension Neptunia (wanted to play the game for the lulz, so the animoo is a must-laugh!)
9. WataMote (Good animoo that I never finished)
10. ??? (Recommend something. I'm bored.)

I'll still suggest The Big O. Or Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I don't watch animoo often but those are two good ones I watched, though PMMM might depress you. Or just fuck with you.

A lot of this is just entertainment, not Japanese animation. I suppose it's mostly good, though.

RE: Nuke's animoo
Are you still interested in animoo recommendations? I had some time today and started to write down some lengthy explanation to some of the animes that were listed in SYKO's post, though I'm not finished yet and would also recommend some animes not listed yet. Though I probably could have saved some time if I had asked before what animes you actually have watched yet or if you know anything about the listed animes already.

RE: Nuke's animoo
For suggesting an animoo it would be kinda helpful to know in what you are interested. I take that you don't want to watch a romance-drama overflowing girly animoo and most likely are more the type for more 'serious' things? To use some Japanese-animoo related terms here: More shojo (girly, love, drama, more love) or more shonen (more boy-orientated, more action)?

Warning: It may be that the whole thing is totally uninteresting for you. But I’m kinda bored and have some time, so this might get really, really long.
It did get really really long. I'm sorry. I hope it is still readable.

Some good animes were already stated in above posts though that big one isn't really reader-friendly.

Bleach, Naruto and One Piece, maybe Fairy Tail for some, are classics. It depends on what you like. But all four are very action orientated.

I think Bleach is good for everyone who likes action and a good portion of humour. My advice: Skip the filler arcs - the 'seasons' of the animoo which were produced because the animoo caught up to close to the mangoes . Most of those are pretty annoying, but it depends on what you like.
What is it about? Ichigo Kurosaki is a 15 year old highschool student who can see and speak spirits / ghosts which is pretty normal for him. One day his family is attacked by monster that puts his sisters in danger. Shortly before, a strange girl appeared in Ichigo’s room, surprised that he can see her and enchained him with a spell stating she was a ‘shinigami’, a ‘death god’. After she fails defeating the monster and Ichigo freeing himself, she transfers her power to him, making him a shinigami. Ichigo defeats the monster, which is called a Hollow, and rescues his family. After this encounter, the girl, called Rukia, orders Ichigo to fight Hollows in the town, which eventually leads to a lot of trouble for them both and others, having to go to the afterworld and the world of the hollows.
World: There are humans, shinigami, quincy, spirits and hollows. Spirits are the spiritual remains of dead people. They need to be sent to the afterworld by the shinigami or otherwise they lose their hearts, practically their ‘ego’, and turn into hollows, who only strive to devour other spirits. Hollows are fought by shinigami and quincy. The difference between shinigami and quincy is, that shinigami are beings from the afterlife and send the hollows back into a circle of rebirth. The quincy are humans with special abilities and they destroy the hollows for good. This results in an unbalance of the three worlds (real world, afterworld, hollow-world) and this is why they were battled by the shinigami.
Battle style: Swords, swords and more swords. Their spiritual power is called "reiatsu". One party is supposed to mainly fight with bow and a reiatsu-powered arrow, but somehow the current mangoes chapters are contradicting this.

Same for Naruto. It has lots of Ninja-stuff, which you may know, and lots and lots of battles and some funny moments in the calm time between the battles. Again, better skip most of the filler arcs. Maybe there are some good ones, but most of them are annoying.
Story: Naruto Uzumaki is a 12 year old orphan. He has no friends and people evade him for a reason he doesn’t know. He strives for attention through bad jokes and vandalism, mostly graffiti. He is a student of the local Ninja Academy, because he desires to one day become Hokage, the head of the shinobi (ninja) in his country, so that everyone looks up to him and respects him. Problem is, that he is almost good for nothing, even failing the initial test to achieve the lowest ninja rank of a Genin. After some unfortunate events he learns that a demon, the Kyuubi (= nine-tailed), was sealed into him. When the Kyuubi attacked the village 12 years ago. This is why everyone is afraid of him. Naruto only gets even more determined to become Hokage and to achieve everyone’s respect. He gets accepted as a genin after rescuing his teacher. The story further evolves around his team and its journey to become great shinobi and leads among other things to a major conflict between the shinobi and renegade ninja.
World: Ninja are called ‘shinobi’. There are different, competing countries. Shinobi are practically something like their ‘army’ or ‘police’ and there also exist secret agencies for more ‘spy’-like work. And there exist 9 monsters / demons, called ‘biju’, whom humans are afraid of.
Spiritual Power: Chakra, flowing through everyone’s body.
Battle style: Taijutsu is the mainly unarmed combat, which can be powered by chakra. Genjutsu are chakra powered illusions. Ninjutsu are chakra powered elemental attacks. They also have some additional ninja-items. Also, there exist some families who have special abilities which are inherited by blood. These abilities are called ‘Kekkei Genkai’ and each ability has its own specific name.

As the other two, One Piece evolves around action. There are also LOTS and LOTS of comical scenes. Even the art style is more comical. Especially in the later episodes you encounter very bizarre characters. Sadly, from all three 'classic' animes, this one has by far the most exaggerated females, though Bleach, too, seems to only know either flat females or those with melons on their front. In One Piece, practically every female is tall, big-big breasted, has almost no space in her stomach for organs cause her taille is almost gripable with one hand, has a large ass and long, long legs. Oh, and they almost wear nothing. But let's go on with the more important things.
Story: Ruffy D. Monkey is a carefree 17 year old guy who wants to become the Pirate King through finding and claiming the ‘One Piece’ treasure hidden by the executed pirate Gol D. Roger in the so called ‘New World’, a sea divided by the rest of the world through multiple barriers. To obtain this goal, Ruffy starts recruiting people for his pirate crew and starts his long, difficult journey through the Grandline.
World: The world is divided into four major seas, each containing multiple countries and islands. The Grandline is a separated guileful sea, which has to be passed to reach the New World. Every pirate crew aiming for the One Piece travels through there. The main forces are the pirates on the one hand and the marine forces on the other hand. Among many strange things like floating islands, people with little wings on their backs, merpeople and fishpeople exist the so called ‘devil fruits’. When a person eats one, he obtains random abilities, ranging from the ability to stretch one’s body like gum over the ability to turn people into ‘art’ to even control an element.
Battle style: Everything. Really. They fight with everything. Many people possess bizarre abilities after having eaten a 'devil fruit', others just have chosen insane battle styles. One Piece almost knows no borders for fighting-styles.
Most of the fillers are okay (at least how I remember them).

I don't know much about Fairy Tail, because I'm neither watching it nor am I reading the mangoes , but it is also very action orientated. The fighters are divided into guilds and are, as far as I know, either a 'normal' magician or were raised by a elemental dragon and have proven their power defeating this dragon later in a fight or something like that. They are called 'dragonslayers' and are very strong fighters. I don't actually know what the storyline is.

Blue Exorcist is really good if you are interested in action and a little interest in spiritual-demon-things wouldn't be bad. I really like the first half, say the first 13 episodes, because it really very close to the mangoes . The second half is animoo-only and follows a different plot than the mangoes . I think it's a pity that they decided to not animate the mangoes further, because the most interesting things are still to come.
Story: Rin Okumura is 15 years old raised together with his twin brother Yukio in a monastery. People think he is strange, having been very powerful since being a kid and having fast healing wounds. One unfortunate day, he gets attacked by a demon possessing a boy, muttering he had been searching for him. Rin gets saved by his foster father Shiro Fujimoto, who reveals that he and the other priests in the monastery are exorcists who indeed fight demons. Rin is also confronted with the statement that he is a spawn of Satan himself. His demonic powers had been sealed, but the seal is weakening. When his father Shiro eventually gets possessed by Satan who tries to take him to the demon realm Gehenna, Shiro kills himself with his last strength to save Rin. Devastated, Rin releases the seal, becoming actively a half-demon, and destroys the portal to Gehenna to save Shiros body. After his father’s funeral, Rin is confronted by other exorcists lead by a man called Mephisto Pheles. He states they came to follow the command of the True Cross Order to eliminate him. Rin offers Mephisto another solution: Rin Okumura wants to become an exorcist like his father, to not be a threat to humanity and to eventually kick Satan’s ass. Thus starts Rin’s long and difficult training to one day become an exorcist.
World: Assiah is the human world, Gehenna is the demon realm. They exist separate from another. Demons don’t possess a body in the human world and have to possess bodies and other things to exist there. Some demons and spirits are more or less harmless, others are actively harming Assiah and others simply are poisonous to the human world. Normal humans don’t know about the existence of demons. To be able to see one, one has to be injured by a demon or being related by one by blood. The True Cross Order exists to protect Assiah from demons, combining various religious traditions and schools.
Battle Style: There are five basic exorcist classes. The Tamer summons demons and spirits and commands them, the Doctor is a medical specialist, the Aria fights by reciting religious verses that harm / destroy a demon, a Dragoon is a firearm specialist and the Knight is a swordsman. One can combine all those five classes how it suits one personally and even trying to master them all. Religious items like charms or holy water are also used to harm demons. Demons themselves have their own, specific abilities.

Mai Hime is pretty much a mix of shojo and shonen. It has much action, but the protagonists are pretty much all female with pretty female teenager problems and drama. The soundtrack is awesome, if you don’t watch the animoo you should at least take a listen into the OST.
The story practically evolves around a group of school girls who learn that they were chosen to battle each other, to even kill each other so that the winner becomes the bride of a supernatural being ‘Dark Prince’ that is supposed to bring welfare to Japan. These girls are called ‘Hime’, princess, and are marked with a symbol somewhere on their bodies. Each of them possesses some kind of special ability, mostly elemental orientated, and can summon a ‘Child’, a monster that helps them fight. The connection between Hime and Child is very strong, if one dies the other dies, too. Also, if the person the Hime loves the most dies, the Hime loses her power. Aside from having to fight each other, they are fighting a concern named ‘Orphan’ who is interested into the wealth promised by the Dark Prince himself.

I haven’t watched the other animes listed by SYKO yet, aside from Shingeki no Kyojin, which you seem to know yourself and which is an awesome animoo, and I know a little about Deathnote though primarily about the mangoes . Magi is on the list of animes I want to watch myself, though I don’t know that much about it yet, so I can’t talk about it. Let’s quickly say something about Deathnote and then go on with some animes I would recommend.

Death Note is an animoo with excellent drawings and different from the other animes mentioned until now it has more ‘real’ looking proportions and style.
Story: Light is a genius high school student who is bored by everything. One day he finds a black notebook with the title ‘Death Note’. He takes it home with him and tries out the instructions written into it (I think they are) after seeing a News about a criminal. Writing down a name in this note book while having the face to the name exactly in mind, the person will die at a set time. Light also meets the original owner of the note book – a shinigami called Ryuk, who was bored and left it in the human world. From there on, Ryuk follows Light, who finds his purpose in killing criminals. This evolves into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse between Light and the Police.

I don’t really know that much more about the actual story. Let’s continue with some animes that weren’t mentioned yet.

Let’s see. I want to present Ergo Proxy, Mirai Nikki, Ghost Hunt and Elfen Lied. Why has no one mentioned Elfen Lied?

Starting with Mirai Nikki. This animoo does have its kitschy parts but honestly, those are few and actually have a strange feeling when one considers the conditions of the situation. Apart from those scenes, it has lots violence, physical and also in some kind mentally to the protagonist. The animoo also features a character that is practically the stereotype of a ‘yandere’, a violent, obsessed character.
The protagonist is, I think, 14 years old and called Yukiteru Amano. He isn’t really active in interacting with his surrounding, always typing everything he sees into his cellphone, which he mainly uses as a diary. He has as imaginary friend called Deus Ex Machina. One day this friend suggests Yukiteru to expand the capabilities of his cellphone. Starting the next day, Yuki’s cellphone starts predicting the future, containing already written entries from a ‘future’ Yukiteru. At the beginning, Yuki thinks this is pretty awesome, until his cellphone starts predicting his murder. He only escapes death through the help of his classmate Yuno Gasai who also possesses a cellphone that can predict the future – in her case the future of Yuki Amano. Yuki then learns that he is participant of a cruel game that forces him and the other participants to kill each other until only one remains. This last survivor will inherit Deus Ex’ position and become god.
So, each of this diaries has a different ability, predicting the future in the way its owner used to write entries. The owners of these ‘future diaries’ (“mirai nikki”) die if their diary gets destroyed.
I thought the story was pretty interesting and most of the characters were, too. If you want to watch a classic yandere in action, you should really watch this.

Ergo Proxy is actually hard to describe because it is so… different from the animes I watch normally. For one, it has a pretty much apocalyptic setting and I can’t actually describe the story-telling. It has beautiful animations and drawings, the story is very confusing in some parts. A few episodes gave me a headache.
The world is post-apocalyptic, humanity can only survive inside special spheres. The outside is toxic. The life is strictly controlled by the government, but to the normal citizen it looks like a utopia. When a series of strange murders occur, special investigator Real is tasked to investigate. At one situation, she is attacked by a being nor human nor android, and the case eventually leads her beyond the borders of her safe haven.
I know this sounds pretty vague. But it is worth a watch, at least the first few episodes. I just want to mention that Real is pretty much a self-centered bitch but she does have some good character development.

Ghost Hunt is, as the name indicates, ghost / spirit centered. Maybe it’s not scary enough for some people, I thought it was pretty well made and a worthy animation of the mangoes .
The main character is a school girl called Mai. She likes ghost stories, but does not actually believe in them. One day, the school director calls a specialist for paranormal activity to investigate an abandoned school building because of the strange occurrences that happened there. Mai is curious and wants to see what is going on – and accidently destroys some of the expensive equipment. She now has to work for this specialist – who is revealed to be an only 17 year old, self-centered teenager - and is introduced to the world of paranormal activities. Together with other experts they start investigating supernatural occurrences and risking their lives more than once.
I don’t want to say anything about the cases themselves, but the stories are all very well done and worth a watch.

Elfen Lied is a class on its own. I actually don’t recommend the mangoes , I tried once and it is pretty confusing. The animoo may not cover every single bit of the mangoes but it tells a very good story on its own. You should not be disgusted by blood, torn bodies, flying limbs and naked skin when watching this. The first episode already demonstrates very well how the animoo goes. Elfen Lied actually tells a pretty sad story for each character, the happy moments are very precious, the tragic ones very heavy.
Elfen Lied begins with the escape of a woman from a mix of prison and research facility. On her way out she kills everyone who meets her way on a very mysterious way. She doesn’t move a single limb to attack and seems to possess telekinetic powers, moving objects without touching them. After she arrives at a cliff, she is shot in the head by a sniper. The bullet only strives her, she falls into the sea. She is later found with amnesia at the beach by two students who take her in. She is differs from a normal human through her pink hair, pink eyes and two small horns on her head. The following story evolves around this living community, the girl ‘Nyu’ being torn between her sweet, childlike amnesic persona and her coldhearted, murderous persona and the research facility trying to get her back or to kill her.

I can’t summarize plotlines of animes.
But, here, some animoo suggestions and an idea what they are about and not only their names thrown into the room.
